Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What are you products made of?
A: All our products are made from 5052 marine grade aluminum alloy. The bodies themselves are constructed out of .156 (5/32).
Q: Are your bodies stronger than the original steel bodies?
A: Yes, our aluminum bodies are considerably stronger than the original steel bodies. Our bodies are approximately 3 X’s as thick and 60% stronger than the originals.
Q: How to you ship your products?
A: All shipping and brokerage is handled by Aqualu on your behalf. Larger products are generally shipped via various LTL trucking companies and smaller components are shipped through either Purolator or UPS. All our aluminum bodies, cabs and bodes are packaged in a partial plywood crate with 2x4’s and nylon strapping holding it all together. All smaller components are packaged in cardboard boxes with foam padding depending on the part.
Q: How much is shipping to the USA?
A: This will vary depending on your location and final weight. An approximate estimate for shipping to the USA is between $600-$800. Please don’t hesitate to e-mail info@aqualu.com for a more accurate shipping quote.
Q: Do you ship internationally?
A: Yes we ship internationally. You can e-mail info@aqualu.com to request a freight quote. Please be sure to include the part numbers you are interested in, as well as your full shipping address. All duties, taxes and VAT’s are additional and to be paid by the customer.
Q: How long does it take to complete an order and get it ready for shipping?
A: Most of our products are in stock and ready to ship out within a few days from receipt of an order. An estimated shipping date will be provided to you at the time you place your order.
Q: Are your products in stock?
A: A large percentage of our products are in stock and ready for shipping. Custom orders typically take anywhere from 4-6 weeks to complete depending on the level of custom work required.
Q: I am a US customer, can I pick-up my products from your location in British Columbia?
We typically discourage our US customers from coming into Canada and picking up their products. In British Columbia we have a 12% HST sales tax. If you were to come to Canada to pick an order up we would have to charge this 12% HST sales tax. Visitors to Canada are eligible for a tax rebate to be applied for at the time of border crossing back into the US. Attached is a link with general information and application form for rebate. http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/tx/bsnss/tpcs/gst-tps/rbts/vstrs/menu-eng.html. Please contact your local customs agent for more information about how to go about this.
Q: Am I able to coordinate my own shipping?
A: Yes, our policy is that if the customer coordinates their own shipping, they will be responsible for all aspects of the procedure involving documentation, contacting the shipper for pick-up and customs clearance. Our office would then receive the completed documentation from you and provide it to the designated transport company at time of pick-up. Our freight quotes include all of the above services; please contact us if you would be interested in a shipping quote. We have found in the past it is more convenient for the customer if Aqualu coordinates shipping and customs clearance.
Q: Can you make replacement bodies for Bronco’s/ Scout’s?
A: We have looked into Bronco/ Scout bodies in the past but because of all the compound curves and rolled edges we are unable to produce them cost effectively.
Q: Do you make Jeep TJ Bodies?
A: We have built custom bodies that have been made to accept a TJ hood and a TJ windshield frame, the rest of the body fits on a CJ/ YJ frame and utilizes all the CJ/ YJ interior components.
Q: Do you accept custom orders?
A: Yes, depending on the extent of the work required we can usually accommodate most requests. Please e-mail us at info@aqualu.com and request a quote.
Q: What do you recommend for painting your aluminum products?
A: We do not do any painting in house and send all our work out for painting or powder coating. We suggest that you contact a reputable body shop who is familiar with painting aluminum. For additional information please see the info sheet below on Painting with PPG Product’s.
Q: What is electrolysis and what can be done about it?
A: Electrolysis is a reaction that occurs between two dissimilar metals. To avoid the possibility of this happening you will want to isolate the metals. Paint is a barrier, but we provide a tube of Sikaflex polyurethane compound to apply to sections on the body where the steel and aluminum meet. We also advise placing rubber (Ex: old inner tubes) between seat mounts and roll bars, or any other area where the two metals join.
Q: How much work will have to be done to your products prior to painting?
A: All welded seams are ground down and finished with a scotch brite pad. Some minor body work may be required depending on your desired color and finish. (Darker colors may require more prep work before painting)
Q: Do you sell transmission covers?
A: Yes, although our transmission covers are made to work with our aluminum bodies only. They are available both with and without holes and shifter boots. The reason they differ from the originals is because the floor in our aluminum bodies is slightly different than that of the originals.
Q: Why are your products for Off Road use only?
A: All of our aluminum products are manufactured to stand up to the rugged Off Road environment. Please understand that all of our products are designed for OFF ROAD USE ONLY. Although these parts might be suitable for daily use they are not specifically designed for it.
Q: Are the bodies difficult to assemble?
A: Over 90% of the components purchased from us are assembled by the purchaser/ end user. We do recommend basic knowledge on mechanics since the old body does need to be removed. We suggest you allow 30-40 hours for assembly depending on your skill level and desired end result.
Q: What’s included with the bodies?
A: All our FJ40 bodies come with stock width running boards (#4020), mounting hardware, sikaflex, rubber shifter boots, install DVD and the 1978+ older bodies also include mounting pads. Please refer to individual part numbers for more information.
Q: Do I need to pre-fit my components before painting/ powder coating?
A: Yes we highly recommend that you pre fit your components prior to painting or powder coating.
